Brown Pork Soda In The Punchbowl. What????

Any guesses on what that title is about? I have my doubts that more than a very small few might decipher that. Give up? It’s code words for i have been listening to a lot of Primus this week. Read on if you dont get the title yet. Some may say Primus ? Yep,Primus . If you are creative you can figure out more than one way to wedge them into more than one metal sub genre, and besides that, they are just as great all around band. I have been out roaming the country in the 18 wheeler this week and listened to Pork Soda, The Brown Album and Tales From The Punch Bowl.(get the title now?) Plans for later in the week include listening to Fizzle Fry. Anyways, if you are not familiar with Primus or have been on the fence with them, pull some of their tunes up and give a listen. they are strange indeed, but entertaining on many different levels. Very clever lyrics at times and the musicianship in the band is on a different planet. Most any of you out there that are musicians are probably pretty familiar with Les Claypool and his seemingly magical skills on the bass, but listen a little closer to their guitar player Larry LaLonde or pull up some videos of his and you will see he is a pretty prime time guitarist. Primus have also had the good fortune of having to super diverse drummers in their time. Tim “Herb” Alexander and Brian “Brain” Mantia. Both are spectacular drummers, go check them out on Youtube if you are a drum fan. Primus are a very hard band to describe, they sound nothing like anyone else and they are to put it mildy very strange. If you got drunk and passed out at home and then woke up on a street corner in the middle of Mardi Gras, picking up the pieces and trying to figure out what had happened and how you got there is kind of like you feel at the end of a Primus album. At first, you aren’t sure what’s happening when you wake up, but you are at a place that looks and sounds cool and you know you were having a good time last night so you know there is a good story here somewhere and it really intrigues you to figure it all out and and learn how to get back there again. That description is a lot like a Primus record. You put it on and you really arent sure whats happening but you have a feeling it’s going to be pretty cool, you get to the end and you know it was fun but you just are not sure what you just heard so you want to try it out again and learn a little more. thats the best way I know how to put it. Primus is a weird listen everytime but they will rock your socks off and definitely make you want to keep listening just so you can figure out what they are doing, why they are doing it….and damn it, how are they doing it so good? Oh well, enough rambling. Primus is definitely my recomendation today. Go listen for yourself if you dont already.

Yay Primus! And don’t forget Les’ side projects too. My favorite is the Fearless Flying Frog Brigade. They’d do 2 set shows, first set being a bunch of prog rock covers mixed with a Primas and Sausage song or two, the second set being Pink Floyd’s Animals album in its entirety. Just sick!
